UGC Creator in Canada: Getting Work and Getting Paid.

Which UGC apps take creators in Canada, what a US brand's parcel can owe at the border, and why a US$500 fee can lose 7% before it reaches your bank.

October 23, 2026

Making UGC from Canada is the same job as anywhere else: a brand sends a product, you shoot photos or videos of it, and the brand pays you. What changes is everything around the shoot. Fewer apps take you. A parcel from a US brand can come with a bill at the door. And how much of a US-dollar fee reaches your bank depends on the route it takes. At the fees and exchange rates published on October 23, 2026, a US$500 job paid through PayPal comes to roughly CA$647 to CA$653, while the same US$500 paid by bank transfer into a Wise account comes to about CA$697.123

Where creators in Canada find paid UGC work

Start with the apps that already take creators here or pay out to Canada. Several from our guide to UGC apps for beginners do, and each one moves money across the border differently. The table lines them up with the marketplace that publishes this guide.

AppOpen to creators in Canada?Who sets the priceHow the money reaches you
BilloYes, per its creator terms4Billo sets a payout on each job and it can't be negotiated; you set your own rates for organic posting and Partnership ads5Fees in US dollars; Stripe converts them into your chosen currency and pays your bank weekly46
CollabstrNo creator country list in its help center; its payout page lists Interac for Canada7You, through your packages8Interac, PayPal or a local bank transfer, after a 15% commission7
InsenseYes, per its creator page9You and the brand, by negotiation9PayPal (about 4 business days) or a bank account with a 9-digit routing number (about 7)10
JoinBrandsYes, through a Canadian marketplace priced in Canadian dollars11The brand: CA$60 by default for a UGC video, CA$50 minimum, before a 20% fee11PayPal only; a payout can take up to 7 business days12
ModliflexYesYouPayPal or Wise, once your balance reaches US$100; third-party fees and currency conversion charges may be deducted

Getting in works differently on each one. Insense, for example, asks for at least 1,000 followers with 1% engagement; if it turns you down on those numbers, you may be able to reapply with a UGC-only portfolio of 6 to 12 videos. The apps guide lists what the others ask for.913 One thing the table can't settle: Billo's terms put Stripe's conversion costs on you, while its help center says Billo covers the transfer fees, so compare your first payout with the fee on the order.46

Expect a shorter list of jobs than creators in the US see. JoinBrands runs five separate marketplaces (the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and Germany/EU), and some job types, such as TikTok Shop videos, exist only in the US one.11 Some apps are US-only: soona, for one, takes UGC creators from anywhere in the US.14 In July 2026, a creator in Canada wrote on r/UGCconnect that the well-paying gigs posted on Reddit, at $500 and up, say USA only.15

So pitch brands directly too, starting with Canadian ones. In Statistics Canada's survey for the second quarter of 2026, 16.6% of businesses said they had changed their marketing over the previous 12 months to promote Canadian products, and so had 42.7% of retailers.16 A video shot in a Canadian kitchen, with Canadian weather at the window, fits that story. To find brands already buying, use the weekly routine in how to find UGC brands to pitch: open the Meta Ad Library, set the country to Canada and search your niche for creator-style ads.

Not every client has to ship you anything. Apps, online services and other digital products have nothing to send across the border, which makes them the easiest US clients to take on from Canada.

French was the first official language spoken by 21.4% of Canadians at the 2021 Census, and brands selling in Quebec can't skip it.17 Quebec's language office says a business's commercial posts on social media for the Quebec market must be in French, videos included, even when the content comes from someone else. A version in another language can run alongside, as long as the French one is at least equivalent.18 So a brand that runs your English video for Quebec needs French content too, and if you speak French, you can offer it. Say so in your profile and your pitches. Billo already lets brands order videos in French, as well as English, Spanish and Portuguese.19

Settle the deal before anything ships

Agree on the details of a direct deal before the product leaves the US. Once it's on your doorstep, you have much less say.

Put a currency on every price

CA$60 and US$60 aren't the same price. The Bank of Canada's rate on October 22, 2026 was 1.4021, so US$60 was worth about CA$84.20 Write the currency into every quote and invoice ("US$400", not "$400"), and quote US brands in US dollars. The UGC invoice template shows where it goes.

We found no published survey of what UGC pays in Canada. As a reference point, we read three hiring posts aimed at creators in Canada on r/UGCcreators between November 2025 and February 2026. Two offered CA$40 to CA$75 a video, the third US$50 to US$80, and all three asked for paid-ad use as well, one of them only "with permission".212223 The UGC pricing guide puts paid-ad use on its own line, so those offers are lower than they look. Three posts are too few to call a going rate.

Ask who pays at the border

Charges at the door aren't small change. In an October 2024 thread on r/UGCcreators, a creator in Canada paid just over $100 in fees when a US brand's first shipment to Canada was delivered. Neither side had known the border would charge anything, and the brand paid it back afterward.24 A brand that wants your content should get the product to you at no cost, border charges included. So ask before it ships, and get the answer in writing: will it prepay any duty, tax and carrier fees, or send the product from inside Canada? A bill from Canada Post or a courier on a genuine brand's parcel isn't a scam in itself. A brand asking you to send it money for shipping or customs is one of the oldest fake-brand-deal tricks.

Agree how you'll be paid

On an app, the payout route is set for you. On a direct deal with a US brand, you choose it, and it changes what you keep. Put details for an ACH bank transfer on your invoice: a personal Wise account gives creators in Canada a US account number and routing number.25 If the brand would rather pay through PayPal, agree before you start who absorbs PayPal's fee. On direct deals across the border, also ask for a deposit before you shoot, because chasing a small unpaid invoice in another country rarely pays off. UGC payment protection covers deposits and the other safeguards.

If a US payer asks for a W-8BEN

US brands and platforms may ask creators outside the US for Form W-8BEN, the IRS form that certifies you're a foreign person for US tax purposes. The IRS says to give it to the payer that asks for it, not to the IRS, and to fill it in when asked, even if you're not claiming a lower withholding rate.2627 With a valid one on file, a payer generally doesn't have to report your pay on a Form 1099.28 The form asks for your home address and may ask for your Canadian tax number, so send it only to a payer you've checked out.27

Under IRS rules, pay for services counts as income from the country where you do the work, wherever the payer is.29 If a US payer withholds US tax from a fee for content you made in Canada, ask why before the next job, and talk to an accountant before you fill in the form's treaty section.

A free product can still cost you at the border

Mail and couriers have different limits. Sent by mail, a parcel reaches you through Canada Post and owes no duty or tax only up to CA$20. Above that, duty and taxes apply, and Canada Post adds a CA$9.95 handling fee to each item that owes them.3031

A courier shipment from the US owes no duty or tax up to CA$40, tax but no duty up to CA$150, and both above that.30 The courier can also charge its own fee for the customs paperwork, which CBSA treats as a private matter between you and the courier.32 CBSA's rules for these limits are written around goods the person in Canada ordered or bought, and they don't say how they apply to a product a brand sends you, so plan as if a brand's parcel might not qualify.33

US-made goods can owe a surtax of up to half their value. Since September 8, 2026, Canada has charged a surtax of 15%, 25% or 50% of the value on a list of goods made in the US, and it applies even below the limits above.34 In the list as updated on August 26, 2026, lip makeup, eye makeup, perfume and cotton T-shirts are at 50%, while skin care and shampoo aren't on it (other hair preparations, tariff item 3305.90, are).35 So a US-made eyeshadow palette valued at CA$40, sent by courier from the US, owes a CA$20 surtax even though it's within the courier limit. What counts is where the product was made, not where it shipped from or where the brand is based. Check the label, and check the current list before a big shipment.

A gift label changes nothing. CBSA's CA$60 gift exemption doesn't cover items sent by a business.36

If a bill turns up anyway, the brand should settle it. Don't pay it out of your own pocket and hope to be repaid. A parcel through Canada Post comes with a CBSA form, the E14, showing what's owed. Tell the brand the amount you're asked to pay and ask it to send you that sum before you collect the parcel, or to have the parcel returned and re-sent with duties prepaid. If it won't do either, refuse the parcel. Separately, if the amount itself looks wrong, you can refuse the parcel and ask CBSA to reassess it, or pay and ask for an adjustment afterward on Form B2G.37 Neither route refunds a charge that was correct.

PayPal or Wise: one US$500 job, two results

On a direct deal, most of the difference comes down to PayPal. A Canadian PayPal account can hold US dollars but can only withdraw Canadian dollars.38 A brand paying you through PayPal for your work makes a commercial payment, which costs you 2.90% plus a fixed fee (US$0.30 on a US-dollar payment), plus another 0.80% when the payer is in the US. Converting the US dollars then costs at least 4.00% above PayPal's base rate if it happens as the payment arrives, and at least 3.00% for other conversions, such as a US-dollar balance you convert later.1 So if a brand does pay through PayPal, keep the payment in US dollars and convert it yourself.

Wise works differently. A US brand can pay a personal Wise account by ACH, using the US account details Wise gives you, and Wise doesn't charge you to receive it (a wire costs US$6.11).2539 On October 23, 2026, converting US dollars to Canadian dollars cost 0.28%.2 Business accounts based in Canada pay a small fee on ACH payments.39

Here's how that worked out for a US$500 job paid directly, at the fees and rates published on October 23, 2026:

Paid through PayPalPaid by ACH to Wise
Fee to receive itUS$18.80 (3.70% + US$0.30)None
Cost to convert and send it to your bankUS$14 to US$19, or moreUS$2.25
What reaches your bankAbout CA$647 to CA$653About CA$697

PayPal took about 7% of what the US$500 was worth and Wise under 1%, so the Wise route left CA$43 to CA$50 more from one job.3

At tax time in Canada

Canadian tax applies to what US brands pay you, just as it does to fees from Canadian clients. How to become a UGC creator covers the basics in its country table and the note under it: the T2125 form, the CA$30,000 GST/HST threshold and declaring the products you keep. Here's what the basics don't cover:

  • Report in Canadian dollars. The CRA's general rule is to convert each foreign-currency amount at the Bank of Canada rate in effect on the day it arises. In certain circumstances, an average rate over the period can be used.40 Keep a short log for each payment: the date, the US-dollar amount and the rate.
  • GST/HST starts once you pass CA$30,000. You don't have to charge it while your taxable sales stay under that. If a single calendar quarter takes you over, GST/HST applies from the sale that did it, and you have 29 days from that sale to register. If it takes two to four quarters in a row to pass it, you can wait one more month: GST/HST then applies from your first sale after that month, and the 29 days run from that sale.41 After you register, services you supply to a non-resident client, such as a US brand, are zero-rated in most cases, which means charged at 0%.42 Those sales still count toward the CA$30,000.41 In Quebec, the same CA$30,000 test applies to registering for the QST.43
  • CPP comes out of your profit. Self-employed, you pay the full 11.9% CPP contribution, both the employee's and the employer's share, on earnings above a CA$3,500 exemption, up to CA$74,600 in 2026. In Quebec, the QPP takes its place.4445

That's a map of where to look, not tax advice. An accountant who works with self-employed Canadians can tell you what applies to you.

Questions creators in Canada ask about UGC

How do I become a UGC creator in Canada?

The same way as anywhere: shoot a few sample photos and videos with products you own, put them where brands can see them, then apply and pitch. In Canada, apply to the apps in the table above, pitch Canadian brands you find in the Meta Ad Library with the country set to Canada, and settle the currency and border costs before a US brand ships anything.

Does UGC work in Canada?

Yes. Several UGC apps take creators in Canada, and brands selling here run creator-style ads you can find in the Meta Ad Library. The catch is a shorter list of jobs than in the US, which is why pitching Canadian brands and border-free clients matters more here.

Do UGC creators make money in Canada?

Some do, but we found no published survey of Canadian UGC earnings, so be wary of anyone quoting an average. The published numbers are per job: JoinBrands' Canadian marketplace defaults to CA$60 for a UGC video, before its 20% fee.11 Pay per job starts modest, and income grows with volume and repeat clients.

What are the best UGC platforms in Canada?

It depends on whether you want to set your own price and how each app pays you. The table above compares both.

Should I tell US brands I'm in Canada?

Yes, up front. A brand has to work out how to get a product to you, so it's better to say where you are before it picks you than after. Put your city and province in your profile and your pitches, and say you can receive products shipped from the US with duty, tax and carrier fees prepaid.

Do I need to label UGC as an ad in Canada?

Mainly when it goes out on your own account. If you deliver the files and the brand posts them, the labeling normally sits with the brand (who labels what). When you post paid or gifted content yourself, Canada's Ad Standards guidelines call #ad on its own the gold standard (#pub in French), want a disclosure inside a video as well as in the caption, and ask for it in the language of the post.4647
